The work of Vauban (1633-1707) can be seen as an essential contribution to the construction of modernity, understood as the period when rationality, in the various fields in which it was invested, came to occupy a predominant place. It is this modernity in Vauban's work that is examined here, both in its political and economic form, where it takes its place in the movement to rationalise political action that will mark the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and in its applications to military architecture and fortifications. The influences that Vauban underwent and exerted on his contemporaries, not only English and German but also American and Canadian, are presented and studied here, along with his possible relevance today. Historians, philosophers and specialists in fortification and urban planning from Europe and the United States have set out to assess Vauban's contribution to the construction of modern times.

In October 2006, the Maison des sciences de l'homme et de l'environnement Claude Nicolas Ledoux (Besançon) brought together some twenty French and foreign researchers from a wide range of disciplines - architecture, history, art history, philosophy and anthropology - at the Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans to commemorate the bicentenary of Ledoux's death by examining the significance, challenges and future of his work. Ledoux was an architect who left behind a number of famous works, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Saline, but he was also the author of an often enigmatic book on architecture, the strangeness of which specialists continue to question. His work, both written and built, raises a number of questions relating to the history of architecture, the development of utopian currents and the regenerative project of the Enlightenment. Interior spaces are realms of experimentation for various design contributors. Alone or in collaboration, they work across several interlinked disciplines, expressed through dialogue, transfers and contaminations, aiming to generate spatial, perceptive and emotional effects. From critical, experimental and contemporary perspectives, the notion of what makes an interior is examined at different scales - from the body to the metropolis, in the context of today’s issues and practices. By overcoming traditional divisions and oppositions, interiors can be rethought and redefined in the context of their relationship to environments, territories and uses, grasping historical and synchronic relevance to identify conceptual operability for the project process. What makes an interior space? How do we design them? How do we read them? How do we practice and feel them?

À l’aide d’outils d’analyse proposés par la théorie littéraire, la philosophie et la psychanalyse ainsi que par des travaux relatifs à la géographie, l’architecture et l’urbanisme, cette étude s’attache aux objets et dispositifs caractéristiques de l’habitation déployés dans les textes respectifs d’Hélène Lenoir et d’Eugène Savitzkaya. Prenant acte du caractère double – parlant et habitant – du sujet de langage, Hélène Lenoir et Eugène Savitzkaya réalisent une analyse très précise de l’espace domestique. Considérer ces deux œuvres comme des écritures de l’habitation révèle plusieurs questions cardinales de ces productions littéraires, de nature thématique (le traitement du corps et de la famille, la métaphore picturale, la description du quotidien, etc.), formelle (le point de vue, le ressassement, le discours intérieur, l’inscription matérielle dans le sol urbain, etc.) et esthétique (la tension entre habiter et représenter ; le rôle de la poésie dans l’espace public ; la relation ...
